2-11-09 Colors & Shapes Try-It

Everyone sure learned a lot from Jessica and Cat, our special guest star Cadettes, who coached the girls on two origami projects: a cat and cup. The big hit, of course, was the M&Ms inside the completed cups!
The second project was 3 different mobius strips, a mathematical demonstration.
The girls colored their own designs on 1 side of the strips, and then Jessica & Cat helped with the twisting, taping, and cutting the strips very carefully. Eash strip came out very differently...it's really a neat experiment!
Our thanks go out to Karen Murphy and her Cadette Scouts, Cat and Jessica, for helping us out. The girls get volunteer award hours and our girls get to learn and hang out with older Girl Scouts. Thanks again!
1-14-09 Investiture & Re-Dedication
Our troop's official addition of Lilly and Maddie into our troop by Investiture
and the Re-Dedication of all of our returning troop members - Congratulations!

At the end of this year, the girls "bridge" to Junior Girl Scouts, which comes with more dedication, greater responsibility, but they can have a greater impact on their community at large.
12-3-08 Red Cross First Aid
Tonight's meeting was all focused on emergency preparedness. There is a surprising amount of preparation your family can do before a crisis occurs and your Brownie Scout can help!
First, we discussed what items your family might need in an Emergency Kit. Whether it's an earthquake or a wildfire that might force you from your home, the girls learned that your family needs supplies to be self-sufficient for 3-5 days minimum. Here's a partial list the girls came up with:
Our troop also learned about beginning First Aid, specifically splinting and arm or a leg.
Suppose an earthquake happens, and a member of your family or a neighbor is injured from falling furniture. You think they might have broken their arm. While you're waiting for an ambulance to arrive, you need to splint the limb to prevent the injury from getting worse.
The girls learned how to split both an arm and a leg using just magazines or cardboard and rag strips. Check out our splint teams:

- A sturdy, easy to carry container, like a large duffel bag or rolling trash can
- water (1 gallon per person per day)
- food (non-perishable)
- can opener
- flashlight
- battery operated radio
- tools
- extra batteries
- blankets and clothing
- medication
- first aid kit
- pet supplies (water, food, medication)
- sanitary supplies (sponge, soap, paper plates, plastic silverware, trash bags, toilet paper)
- money
