2-11-09 Colors & Shapes Try-It

Everyone sure learned a lot from Jessica and Cat, our special guest star Cadettes, who coached the girls on two origami projects: a cat and cup. The big hit, of course, was the M&Ms inside the completed cups!
The second project was 3 different mobius strips, a mathematical demonstration.
The girls colored their own designs on 1 side of the strips, and then Jessica & Cat helped with the twisting, taping, and cutting the strips very carefully. Eash strip came out very differently...it's really a neat experiment!
Our thanks go out to Karen Murphy and her Cadette Scouts, Cat and Jessica, for helping us out. The girls get volunteer award hours and our girls get to learn and hang out with older Girl Scouts. Thanks again!

1-14-09 Investiture & Re-Dedication

Our troop's official addition of Lilly and Maddie into our troop by Investiture
and the Re-Dedication of all of our returning troop members - Congratulations!

At the end of this year, the girls "bridge" to Junior Girl Scouts, which comes with more dedication, greater responsibility, but they can have a greater impact on their community at large.

12-3-08 Red Cross First Aid

Tonight's meeting was all focused on emergency preparedness. There is a surprising amount of preparation your family can do before a crisis occurs and your Brownie Scout can help!

First, we discussed what items your family might need in an Emergency Kit. Whether it's an earthquake or a wildfire that might force you from your home, the girls learned that your family needs supplies to be self-sufficient for 3-5 days minimum. Here's a partial list the girls came up with:
  1. A sturdy, easy to carry container, like a large duffel bag or rolling trash can
  2. water (1 gallon per person per day)
  3. food (non-perishable)
  4. can opener
  5. flashlight
  6. battery operated radio
  7. tools
  8. extra batteries
  9. blankets and clothing
  10. medication
  11. first aid kit
  12. pet supplies (water, food, medication)
  13. sanitary supplies (sponge, soap, paper plates, plastic silverware, trash bags, toilet paper)
  14. money
The Red Cross website has a complete list of supplies needed, as well as compact First Aid Kits for purchase. Consider keeping a First Aid Kit in each car as well as one for your home.

Our troop also learned about beginning First Aid, specifically splinting and arm or a leg.

Suppose an earthquake happens, and a member of your family or a neighbor is injured from falling furniture. You think they might have broken their arm. While you're waiting for an ambulance to arrive, you need to splint the limb to prevent the injury from getting worse.

The girls learned how to split both an arm and a leg using just magazines or cardboard and rag strips. Check out our splint teams:

11-19-08 SHELTER food sort

Food collection and donation to SHELTER

For families hitting hard times that are in need, SHELTER provides Thanksgiving food items

The girls were able to collect food from their own homes and/or collect from their neighborhood. Together, the troop rallied together and not only sorted the food, separating canned from pantry items, but also created homemade Thanksgiving cards.

This exercise prompted thoughtful discussion focusing on thinking of others, donating your time and a little of what you can spare, and thankfulness for what we have every day - friends, family, and a great community.

Directly after our meeting, I brought the food and cards over to PHE, where they were combined in a very large & heavy yellow bin with other food items from other Girl Scout Troops. We, however, were the only troop that created their own special touch with the holiday cards!

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

11-5-08 Creative Composing Try-It

Task #3 is to compose a poem, about anything the girls chose. This, of course, took much thought! Steph below wrote a poem about tickling...

Keniah wrote about her Mom...

Great job, ladies!

Sept 2008 Troop Campout

In order to earn the "Ready, Set, Go Camping" Try It, the 2007-8 girls "camped" in Christine & Lindsay's backyard.

They learned how many different uses a bandana has, how to tie a couple of useful knots (overhand and square knots), and enjoyed making S'mores while telling crazy stories around the make-shift campfire!
Staying up until past midnight was, of course, part of the evening's activities. When the weather chilled out a little bit too much, the girls moved their sleeping bags into the living room.

Imagine what camping on Mt. Diablo would be like?

10-22-08 Meeting - Honor a Woman of your Choice

Tonight's meeting, the troop got back to basics: remembering the Girl Scout Promise, taking attendance, collecting dues, and then...the activity!

In order to earn each Try-It badge, 3 items pertaining to that badge must be completed. Tonight, to earn the "Her Story" Try It, the girls talked about a woman they know and honor, much like how Girls Scouts honor Juliette Low, the founder of the Girl Scouts.
A lot of girls talked about their Moms, Aunts, and Grandmothers, and some were comical!
Then, the girls wrote a timeline of THEIR story. Starting at an age around 6 years old, and in some cases going up to over 100 years old, they wrote what they thought they'd be doing at that age. Very interesting!

4th of July Parade in Downtown Pleasant Hill

All troops of all age groups in the Creekside Service Unit (our local unit covering Pleasant Hill and Martinez) were invited to have as many girls participate in the parade and walk as one large group.

Elena, Lindsay, Montana & Tayler marched for their troop.

Lindsay is tired of waiting for the parade to begin...

As you may be able to see, bubbles were flying from small bottle of bubble stuff handed out by all the girls and our bubble machine in our red, white & blue wagon!

Finishing up the parade route through Crescent Drive in Downtown Pleasant Hill - good job, ladies!
